The first and last weekends of January 2008 were not kind to Spearfish. Mother Nature unleashed strong winds January 4-5, causing considerable roof damage to several Yellowstone Place Association buildings. While some repairs were made, more nasty weather intervened and delayed further repairs.

Then, of course, came even stronger winds this last weekend. One experienced observer clocked wind speeds at 101 miles per hour in Lawrence County. Tractor-trailers were swept from the roads -- one even rolled and blocked I-90 just up the road at Exit 10.Mother Nature opened a small window of opportunity Monday morning (January 28), and both Frank Cortez and Carroll Goodsell took to the roofs to make repairs. It was a bit windy, but the sun was shining and the temperature topped 51 degrees by noon.
Alas, by 2:00 p.m., winds had shifted from the northwest and temperatures tumbled to 14 degrees. The National Weather Service issued an Urgent Winter Weather Message, so our "window of opportunity" was small, indeed.-
The good news is that all roof repairs have been made.
